Carlos Freitas has been working with music for more than four decades and as a mastering engineer since 1994.

His relationship with music began long before mastering. Carlos studied classical guitar in Brazil, developing a musical foundation that would later shape the way he approached audio. He went on to study Music Production at Berklee College of Music, connecting that musical background with recording, production and technology.

His professional career began in recording studios and live sound, working in very different musical environments before deciding, in 1994, to dedicate himself to mastering. Since then, he has watched nearly every part of the recording industry change — from vinyl and other physical formats to streaming, from analog to digital workflows, and more recently from stereo to immersive audio.

One thing, however, has remained constant.

For Carlos, mastering begins before any technical decision. It begins with understanding the intention of the music — what the artist and producer are trying to communicate, what is already working, and what should be left untouched.

He believes that a mastering engineer should not impose a signature on a record. The signature already exists. It belongs to the artist. His role is to listen, understand and make the decisions necessary to preserve and strengthen that intention.

As technology evolved, Carlos continued to explore new ways of working. He embraced digital workflows as they became part of professional mastering, created eMaster when online mastering was still a new concept, worked in 5.1 surround mastering, and became an early adopter of new standards for digital music distribution.

The technology changed, but its purpose did not. For Carlos, technology has always been a tool to help music reach the listener without losing what made it meaningful in the first place.

Across more than three decades in mastering, Carlos has worked with artists and producers across different genres, countries and generations. Every project may be different, but the fundamental question remains the same:

What does this music need?

Sometimes the answer requires significant intervention. Sometimes very little. And sometimes the most important decision is knowing when to leave something exactly as it is.

In 2020, Carlos moved to the United States, bringing his studio with him and beginning a new chapter that led to Classic Master USA in Florida. As immersive audio became part of that changing landscape, he expanded his work into Dolby Atmos, applying the same principle that has guided his stereo mastering for decades: the possibilities of the format should always serve the intention of the music.

Today, from Classic Master USA, Carlos works with artists and producers around the world in Stereo and Dolby Atmos.

More than thirty years after dedicating himself to mastering, the formats and tools continue to evolve. The essential responsibility does not:

Listen to the music. Understand its intention. Know what it needs — and what it doesn’t.
